August 2010 tour

Dates:  July 30 – Aug 13

The August 2010 Tour is a 14 day running experience of New Zealand’s best running locations.  This tour is ideally scheduled for college athletes preparing for the fall, and for post-collegiate or recreational runners wanting a change of training venue.  Training camp locations have been specifically chosen to provide access to New Zealand’s best running locations, while giving you a chance to see and expereince as much of the country as possible.  There will also be opportunity to compete in the 2010 New Zealand Cross Country championships in Wellington on August 7

Auckland
The ‘City of Sails’  hosts some of the country’s richest running tradition. This is where Arthur Lydiard himself trained  then coached the likes of Peter Snell, Murray Hallberg, John Davies, Barry Magee and Bill Baillie to their Olympic successes. You will experience first hand where these Kiwi running legends learned their trade on runs such as the Auckland Domain, Cornwall Park and the Waiatarua circuit on Auckland’s infamous Waitakere ranges – Lydiard’s infamous Sunday run!

Rotorua
Only 2 ½ hours drive from Auckland is arguably New Zealand’s best training location, with endless miles of undulating forest trails.  Many running clubs and other organisations including Athletics New Zealand host distance running camps in Rotorua to make use of Redwood forest and the Whakarewarewa trail network.  Other well known running locations such as Mount Maunganui, Tauranga and Taupo are all within easy driving distance of the Rotorua base.  Rotorua also offers a chance to experience Maori culture, geothermal activity, trout-fishing, golf, luge-ride, Agrodome, hot pools, and many other popular adventure tourism attractions.

Hutt Valley /Wellington
Wellington is the capital city of NZ and offers a mix of bush covered hills, river valleys and flat coast lines… ideal for distance running training.  Wellington’s Hutt Valley is also the home of Nick Willis.  While staying in Wellington you will have a chance to expereince some of Nick’s favorite running trails such as the Korokoro stream, Hutt River trail, and the Wellington Waterfront.

Wellington also offers the opportunity to race the New Zealand Cross Country Championships on Saturday August 7.

Nelson (South Island)
Catch the Interislander Ferry to the South Island and stay at the newly established NZ Running Acadey in Nelson, home of Olympic Bronze Medalist Rod Dixon. Nelson is renowned for its high sunshine hours. The Japanese Marathon team regularly sets up training camp in Nelson because of its beautiful scenery and excellent running locations.
